What is Attachment Disability?
To be human is to cultivate attachments. We can think of attachment as the ability of a person—child or adult—to develop stable and trusting relationships.
Attachment disability results from the pain of separation, loss, or abandonment. The death of a beloved relative or friend, a betrayal of trust, or abuse can inflict pain that is deeply traumatic. A person who undergoes such trauma may react with mistrust, depression, and anxiety. Their ability to develop trusting and stable relationships is disrupted and their ability to learn from experience is undermined. Hope for sufferers from attachment disability lies in helping people in pain clarify and accept their trauma and focus on what they can change.
